Frequently asked questions:
Where exactly do you work?
At the moment I am a fully-remote therapist, licensed to see clients living in Colorado and North Carolina. All of my sessions will be held over a secure Telehealth platform where you will log in to your patient portal to access our video call. I am hoping to expand to in person offerings in the greater Denver area in the near future so stay tuned!
Do you take insurance?
I am not in network with any insurance companies at this time. Working outside of the parameters of insurance allows us to have more freedom in our sessions—we don’t have to meet criteria of a DSM-V diagnosis, we can meet as often as is appropriate for treatment, and most importantly I will get to use my own clinical judgment to give you the best possible care without the stress of insurance limitations.
What if I want to use my insurance benefits?
Many insurance companies and plans will reimburse you for out of network services if you submit an invoice. I can provide you a super bill (proof that you have paid out of pocket for sessions) and you can submit that to your insurance company to determine if they will reimburse you directly for what you have already paid. You may also be able to pay for counseling services through a health savings account (HSA) or flexible savings account (FSA).
Tell me more about your education and licensure.
I have a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and psychology from American University in Washington DC and a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from North Carolina State University. I am credentialed in Colorado as a Licensed Professional Counselor and certified to provide clinical supervision to counselor candidates in the state. I am also credentialed as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and National Certified Counselor with the National Board of Certified Counselors. Unrelated to mental health, I am also a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach and I can bring that experience and perspective into our counseling session if and only if that is something you want to be a part of our work together.
How do I know if we are a good fit?
Let’s start with a conversation! I may not be the right fit for every client or every concern and that is totally okay. Finding the right therapist for YOU is an important part of this process. My goal is to make you feel heard and cared for. During our free consultation, we can discuss what exactly you are looking for in your therapy experience—you can ask any question you have about my experience or this process and we will determine together if I can meet your specific needs.
How do I go about booking a consultation or a first session?
Start by sending me a message here, an email here, or give me a call at 720-740-3153. Let me know what you are looking for and what questions you have. I will be sure to get back to you within a few days so we can move forward. From there we will set up a time to meet and I will create an account for you in my secure online patient portal where you can access the link to our sessions.
What would our first session look like?
Before we even begin our first session, but once we have agreed to work together, you will be invited to fill out some clinical questionnaires on my secure online patient portal. During our first session we will spend time reviewing all of that paperwork, discussing what brought you in to therapy, and getting to know each other. We will work together to develop a treatment plan which could include things like how often you want to meet, what you want to address, and if there are any specific interventions like EMDR therapy that we may want to explore.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?
Cancelling and rescheduling with me is very simple—send me an email or give me a call and we will get you rescheduled as soon as possible. I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy and a $75 late cancellation fee (with case-by-case flexibility) so that I can meet the needs of all of my clients and best plan my schedule.
What if I miss a scheduled session?
I get it, life happens and sometimes things fall through the cracks. If an appointment is missed, you will get one free pass with no charge, and then a $100 no-show fee will apply for any other missed sessions. After three missed appointments (no call, no show) we will discuss if there is anything making it difficult to remember appointments and potentially explore referring you to a new provider who may be a better fit.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. It is a therapy technique primarily used to treat trauma. It involves processing traumatic memories or specific fears about the future while engaging in bilateral stimulation (some kind of movement or stimulation of the eyes or body from side to side) in order to reduce distress caused by the event or memory. I have completed additional training and hours of consultation with a specialist in order to be qualified to provide you with EMDR therapy. This is one tool we may choose to use within our work together but it is absolutely not the only one nor is it the right tool for everyone.
What do you mean when you say “full-body wellness"?
I believe that mind and body are strongly connected and I view you as a whole person, so even though we are working together on your mental health, I may want to explore with you things like your relationship with food, your sleep schedule, if you have a desire to utilize medication or not, how certain situations or places or people make you feel physically as well as emotionally. Trauma is stored both in the body and in the mind, and so some of our interventions could include addressing physical symptoms you experience as well and working on finding ways to feel calm and safe. This could look like taking time in session to stretch, walk, or do breathing exercises, or checking in to make sure you are drinking enough water or making time for a snack while we talk. I am not a doctor nor am I registered dietitian and so for specific medical or dietary needs, I would refer you to an appropriate specialist.
